We have an early flight to Uliastai, Zavkhan province. The Zavkhan province (aimag) occupies a transitional zone between the fertile green Khangai mountain range of Central Mongolia and the harsh Great Lakes Depression of the west. Located between two distinctive regions, Zavkhan has its own climate characteristic and a varied terrain that ranges from snow peaks to steppes and to lakes surrounded by sand dunes. The two hours of flight lands in the very beautiful “Donoi valley airport” in the morning. Our local transportation picks you up there and drives to the Ulaagchinii Khar Nuur shores. We will meet our camel breeding family in the afternoon. Overnight will be in a Ger camp.
(Ger camp L, D)
We’ll start riding along Ulaagchinii Khar Lake in Zavkhan Province, which is one of the most beautiful places in the province. The freshwater lake is bordered on the north by massive sand dunes and on the south by mountainous terrain. It will be a thrilling, adventurous, and breath-taking ride.
Our camel guide will take us on the right path to show all beautiful places during our journey. We will as well learn about two humped Bactrian camels and how to take care of them such as watering, preparing saddles as nomads do in their daily life. Overnight will be tented camping at the shore of the lake.

We will continue our journey further to the north of the lake, where the sand dunes blow slowly with the wind. We make several short stops to enjoy the scenery and absorb the picturesque moments. A number of rare water birds have been noted at the site including the endangered white-headed duck, the vulnerable great bustard and vulnerable white-throated bush chat.

Today’s camel trek will take us through the vast sand dunes to Mukhart Oasis. It’s an incredible location where a river emerges from massive sand dunes and is home to a variety of bird species. We’ll have plenty of time to discover the oasis once we arrive. We are experiencing Mongolia’s unusual landscape, which consists of a combination of desert, grassland, and a large lake. The Mukhart River rises underneath the sand dunes and winds its way through the desert, eventually joining the Zavkhan River.
We’ll continue to Senjit Rock, which is perched atop a hill. The rock used to be whole, but over millions of years, a powerful wind carved the gate into its current shape. The gate is 6 meters wide, 3.5 meters tall, and it adds to the natural beauty of the region. We’ll stay near the stone arch for the night. (Tented camp B, L, D)
Tovkhosh Mountain is located in the west south side of Ulaagchinii Khar Nuur National Park, also considered natural beauty of Zavkhan Province due to its scenic formation. In the afternoon we will set up our campsite and overnight here.
(Tented camp B, L, D)
Today we start to go back to the camp. Our camel guide will find a shortcut because we have already passed quite a long distance from the campsite. The journey back to the lake will be a semi-desert plain with green bushes and granite rocky mountain hills.
(Tented camp B, L, D)
We’ll return to the ger camp for a rest. We might head to Zavkhan province later that night, depending on the flight time the next day.
(Ger camp B, L, D)
The time has come to leave and fly back to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital. You can use your free afternoon to see as you fit. You could always go see the lovely cultural exhibitions and admire the contortionists while watching colourful and rhythmic Mongolian dances.
